I've been looking at coins for only about 2 months and the struggle is REAL lol. I think I need to start focusing on just a few to look for. For 1982 to present (modern coins?), I'm curious what's the most valuable DDO/DDR on modern coin. Same question for varieties.

What's your preference when you're searching modern coins ?

Me too, and sometimes retarded :) Dinner is the "older" word for the noontime meal while the evening meal is often referred to as supper.

What is your objective? Is it to hopefully find varieties because they're what interests you, or is it the desire to profit from them?

If the former, there is much you can do to train your eye, but knowledge is most important. No list or guide can replace truly understanding how to identify the different types.

If the latter, there is little else that is a greater and less-productive waste of time. This certainly isn't to say more valuable varieties cannot be found, but only that the (time) ROI is about the worst imaginable. One could easily do better collecting soda cans.

With all respect Books, it is always nice to know what has value and what does not.

I started going through my change that I've collected over the past few years looking for that one (or a few) valuable coin(s). Time is the reason why I want to just focus on certain finds. I just spent a few hours going through all my pennies, sorted them and went through looking for the easiest, most obvious varieties. I realized I don't have the patience to look for the minute details on DDOs/DDRs and hence the post. I don't do CRH, so I'll be sticking to just the change I get. I am going to start a collection that will eventually be my gift to my daughter when she turns 18...haven't decided what type of coin though. It'll be partly an investment that she can sell someday if she wants to.

I'm curious what others preferences are, I know some are true coin collectors and do it because they really enjoy the coins and not just for its value. On the other hand, I'm sure everyone is hoping luck finds them via their change.

Of course, and with all due respect in return, I don't see where I even remotely suggested otherwise.

The OP (at that time) wasn't clear on his desires/intent, so I attempted to quickly address what we both know are the two main drivers of this niche while hoping he would clarify. It's not like I focused on one and/or assumed the worst.

There aren't that many '82 to date coins I search for. There are lots of older coins though.

I look for the '82-NMM dime and the '82-D sm dt copper cent. I watch for any of the '82 to '84 type "d" reverse quarters (right side of "N" in "UNUM farther from head), '84-D/ D 25c, '88-P rotated reverse half, various RR quarters, dime stock quarters, mule quarters, '84 ddo cent, '92 close AM cent, and of course the WI Denver extra leaf quarters.

There are several other great post-'81 issues but I don't search very actively for them.

Thanks for the reply. I have to look up the 88-P rotated reverse half, I didn't know about that one. I do look out for the 82-D sm date copper, I found an 82-D sm date but it was zinc and now I'm kinda obsessed finding the copper hehe. 92 Close AM is another one that I'm keen to find.
