These were part of my Grandfather's collection that were stored in these cardboard collector books...and as you can see in the first two images the plastic covering does not go all the way across the coin and just the edges were exposed and tarnished. Is there anything that you would suggest to fix this. I know that it is not recommended to clean coins, but I'm sure that this would not help the value of the coins if sold. Also, in the last two images (from a separate holder) they were not covered by plastic which created more of an even tone, but I haven't tried pulling them out to inspect the reverse yet. Any advice is appreciated, Thanks!
I would just leave them all as is personally. The 1878-S and 1879-S have a look that older NGC and ANACS holders create and a lot of people like that look. The 1883-O isn't all that nice of tone but it's minimal and shouldn't affect things too much. Nice coins.
Those coins scream original. They are at the top in desirability now, as those above have said, don't touch them.
Nice group of Morgans. I agree with others; don't touch them now. Do not clean or polish them! You need to decide if you are going to keep them for a while (or longer) or sell soon. If you are going to sell soon, get opinions on their condition from experts who can see them up close. You can have several dealers look at them (easiest done at a coin show) or take them to a meeting of a coin club. Depending on date, mint and condition, some may be worth having graded and slabbed. If you are going to keep them, then learn a bit about handling and storing coins. This can be done via live persons (dealers, coin club members, etc.), books or online sources. Be aware that some online sources provide harmful information. It's easy to find youtube videos that show cleaning methods that will destroy the numismatic value of coins. It only takes momentary mishandling to reduce the value of a coin from hundreds or thousands of dollars to melt value. Cal
Understood on not cleaning them...I like the 1881-S myself, but the back may be shot due to sitting against the cardboard for many years. I will try to remove them carefully and place in archival coin flips. They will all be for sale once I can get my photography setup. Thanks!
How about these? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K0WXBPY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A238NYBEFYJNBP&psc=1
These are no PVC, but unfortunately don't have card inserts. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007KBKDK4/ref=nav_timeline_asin?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Yup. Saflips are the standard for inert flips. Use them. I would suggest getting the 2.5" size. Large coins fit easier and it's what grading services want coins to be in. Cal
That is a nice collection of Morgans. From the pictures, it appears many of the S mints are in quite nice shape. I like the toned ones as well. Instead of flips, have you considered Airtites? You can find them at Wizard Coin Supply. IMO, they'll protect them a lot better over a longer period of time. It looks like your Grandfather had a nice eye. Did you collect any other coins? If yes, would be kind enough to post them?
I see what you are saying about the Airtites, but these coins will be graded and sold at some point so that might be overkill for the immediate future. There is a little bit of everything in the collection...pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and some foreign stuff. 5ft tall cabinet worth and just now sorting everything and getting my photo setup ready. He really liked Morgan’s so just going to start with those.
Good stinkin' grief. edited Lovely group of Morgans. The toning is spectacular! I am super intrigued about how the reverses will look on those folder Morgans.
Once I pop it out I will take a picture of the back, edited I’m not sure what the forum rules are on this though.
