Greetings---Does anyone know whether this has any value? What is the best source to go to (ideally online, or book would be second best) to find approximate values on somewhat recent world coins like this? Thanks! http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc281/getbizzyliving/IMG_1402.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc281/getbizzyliving/IMG_1403.jpg
RScott: Nice coin, yup there is a value to it. Someone will be along in a little while to let you know the exact value.
Your best bet would be the Krause catalog. Value for this type of coin is bascially based on bullion content.
Krause Numismaster Thank you GDJMSP. I see that Krause has an online database, "Numismaster". Do you think that is the best database for looking up coins?
It is, but it is somewhat expensive at $149 a year. The advanatge of the on-line version is that it is somewhat easier to find what you are looking for and it has more up to date values.
Thanks again GDJMSP--I see what you mean...$149 is a pretty steep. But I just signed up for a free account and entered a few coins from my late relative's collection, and found them immediately---so could be a huge time saver. I think I'll sign up for a month to make sure it's worth it. How reliable do you think Krause pricing is vs. reality? (For example, vs. what a seller might get on ebay on an average day?)
eBay is different to Krause. I got a couple of 1820s UK shillings for £3 each, and they have $20 krause value each (MMMMMM!) It is used by dealers, but it is slightly rough even then, (all dealers have their own ideas !)
Also, the catalougues issued by the countries of orogin are more accurate, although you will have to read them in the vernacular...EG Spink's coins of England...
Values in Krause can be all over the map, too low, too high or just right. There is no rule of thumb. But it is what we have in catalog form. Realized auction prices are the best guide, and not necessarily those found on ebay. But for most modern world coins, few are actually sold at auction except on ebay. So you see the problem.
Got it. Thank you GDJMSP for trolling these forums so dutifully and being so willing to share your knowledge.
