Inducing toning on ASE's

(Thought this would go better here than in "Bullion", but feel free to move it if you deem it so, mods)

I have some ASE's (and a few other random silver rounds) that I'm saving for the zombie apocolypse. They are in my SDB just for the metal content. So I'm not losing anything if I try to tone them.

What can I put in the tube with them to induce toning? I've read that there are certain types of paper, etc. that will do the trick. Thanks.

Just leave them out in the open preferably on a wood desk under a window and see what happens. If you start adding materials to induce you're getting into a big grey area...

Introduce a sulfur element. Match stick head, old paper envelope, etc.

Take them out of the tube. Put each one in a paper coin envelope. Some of the most spectacular toning that anyone has ever seen came about as a result of coins being stored in paper coin envelopes. And each and every one of them is considered to have natural toning.

    *Any* paper coin envelope?

They are all pretty much the same unless somebody has started making archival quality envelopes that I am unaware of.

But there is never any guarantee of how natural toning will turn out when coins are stored in envelopes, albums, rolls, or anything else because of all the other variables involved.

    Thanks.

Any other variables that are worth considering? E.g. humidity, temperature, etc.?

Sure, all of them are. Everything from the paint on your walls, the carpet on your floors, the type of heating/cooling system you have, to what you cook for dinner and how you cook it. Then throw in everything else there is.

Thing is there's not much you can do about any of it - it simply is what it is.

Thanks @GDJMSP. I was under the impression that it would be better to have some/moderate humidity since "safe" storage involved desiccants, sealed containers, etc.?

Therefore attempting to tone them in a cool basement next to a dehumidifier would probably be useless. Right?

Garlicus Debt is dumb, cash is king.

I decided to experiment with toning a Silver Eagle. I put it in a manilla envelope and put it on top of my bookcase.

Well, 3-4 YEARS later, this is what I have:

I typed out a long thorough step by step on how to do it...... then decided against...
It involved buying a whole box of match books.

I forgot about this one in a plastic drawer for a year after putting it in there straight from a monster box. Needless to say I was floored when I opened it.

I bought this one from an antique store. It was slightly out of the flip when I bought it. IMG_4050.JPG I slid it out a little more, and set it on a shelf in my office. IMG_0001_2.JPG After a couple more movements and only 5 months later. IMG_0001_1.JPG IMG_0002_1.JPG
My house has been safe as far as toning on other coins. This one has a mind of it's own.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

That is clearly "assisted" toning... but on this coin, that is incredibly cool look. I'd take it out and stabilize it there, because it's perfect.

Put it in an airtite or slab it now. It looks like the shark is really underwater. You need to hault the progression asap!

This one was glued to a piece of heavy paper - appeared to be a torn envelope. Bought at a show from a dealers "junk" bin for a quarter!

Soaked in water for a few days and the glue/paper came right off revealing this coin:
