im looking at buying this New Jersey copper from a guy down the road. I can’t seem to find this exact variety in any of my books, and I got burned with a counterfeit buffalo a few weeks ago so I’m a little apprehensive. Can anyone give me an idea on value, and authenticity? @Paddy54 youhave anything on it? The thing throwing me off is the small line on the plow handle. I don’t see that on any photos I’ve seen.
Wish I could be of help coppers are not on file in the wheelhouse. And to be honest I am the last person to ask anything on coppers....sorry.
I found a variety with the line that is concerning me. It’s a die crack. I don’t think it is the same variety because the details are slightly different but I’m getting closer
Well, it is either the second known 62 1/2-r or a copy of it. It has the looks of a cast copy but I am not willing to call it on a photo. Maybe member @Colonialjohn will take a look at it.
I paid 50 for a buffalo on eBay with edited pictures a few weeks back. It came in and is an obvious counterfeit. I didn’t bother returning it, because it will most likely just be put but for sale, so I ate the 50. I don’t want to do the same thing with this thing
At a NJ metal detecting club meeting, a guy brought in a copper coin from around the same time he'd found in a city park, which was a Connecticut copper, re-struck to make it New Jersey. I think it was supposed to be the equivalent value to an English tuppence. Sorry so vague on the details. The area where I am was first settled by the Dutch in the 1600's, so guys do find a fair amount of old copper coins.
New Jersey coppers held their value better than some of the lightweight Connecticuts, and British Counterfeits. These lightweight coppers were sometimes overstruck with the NJ dies to help pass them.
I ended up passing on it. The kid bought it at an antique store. The rim was perfectly square and round without even a ding anywhere on it. I told him to send it to a Anacs and see what happens. I wasn’t willing to gamble 100 for it
That’s what I told him. Hopefully he sends it in, and if it’s real good for him. One. One more thing I can kick myself in the ass for down the road.
