Man, the '21 and '34 are so cool. I am on the lookout for a PD with that look and have yet to acquire one. Someday! Great sets, all!
Shut the front door! The reverse on that '21 Peace dollar. . . . . goodness gracious. And I thought my digital album was snazzy.....
I filled a Mercury album years ago, except for the 16D. Then pretty much just shelved it. Then a couple years ago an antique shop dealer offered me a raw 16D. I was a little leery, but it looked good and he said he would stand behind it if a TPG condemned it. NGC gave it an AG3, I think the obverse is better, but the reverse has rim wear. I have $269 in it (the 16D), so I don't think I did too badly....sorry for the bad pictures.
Lousy group photo, but here is my business strike set of Jefferson war nickels. Plan to submit for an NGC registry set after I find a suitable example of the lone silver proof. Each coin is up in the Post Your Nickels thread if you’re curious.
That is so cool! I’m sorry about the newbie question but i don’t see any dates on the types of coins. Is it just one of each coin? I have a lot of these and would love to do this!
Yep, there are many ways to do a type set, but the basic idea is to have one nice example of each type. You can do it quite simply (one Washington quarter) or more extensively (silver, clad, bicentennial, States reverse, etc). I chose this particular grouping of coins because that’s how it exists in the PCGS Registry. It’s always debatable about what should be included and what shouldn’t. For example, many would say that there are three major varieties of Standing Liberty Quarters instead of two. The Susan B dollar was produced in a narrow-rim and wide-rim variety.
Thanks so much! New to this and still learning about varieties, errors, etc but I think your set is awesome! Thanks for the feedback! Are your coins in a folder or some sort of display? And can I ask which brand?
Each of the coins in this composite image is in a PCGS slab. I set up the layout, added the background and text, and photoshopped each of the individual images into one larger image. Otherwise the reverses would be up-side down, or at least the layout would be opposite for the reverses. This link should take you to the PCGS Registry page where you can see larger photos of each coin and my comments about it. https://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/ty...culation-strikes-1900-1999/publishedset/88530
Here's a hundred years of US gold. People often speak of a 12-piece US gold type set which doesn't include the Classic Head Quarter Eagle or Half Eagle. If you want to expand on this, there are "no-motto" and "with motto" varieties of many of these. Several other varieties can also be collected.... right up to the High-Relief $20 St. Gaudens.
@orifdoc your sets are beautiful! Thanks for your explanation. I am nowhere where you are as a collector but I’m learning and want to do some folders for my daughter and niece. I’ve done an early Jefferson nickel and an early Lincoln penny. Would love to do the entire collection but none of what I have are slabbed. My dad left them to me so still going through them, and learning! Thanks for sharing.
There are a couple of nice folders that you can use for a US Type set. The Dansco 7070 is a good one. It's includes a few different slots than my set above. Capital Plastics Coin Holders are also nice. Try searching the Internet for these and you should find plenty of options.
