Just took a new picture of a coin that has been in my collection for almost 10 years. It deserved a sharper pic so here it is: The picture may be too good , the scratches are not so visible in hand. Let's see your eastern coins of Augustus! CAESAR Bare head of Augustus right AVGVSTVS in Laurel wreath Seleucis and Pieria. Antioch mint 26mm, 13.6g. Scarce. ex-Incitatus Wildwinds example
This type of patina reminds me of old tooled leather (tooled is not a bad word when it comes to leather ). Gorgeous!
Wonderful coin Jay. I love the portrait. I wonder if portraits of Augustus are what were on Napoleon's mind when he minted his coinage.
That is certainly one of the best of that type I have seen and that type of patina is very sought after, congrats Jay GT4.
Thanks everyone! Yeah the patina is what drew me to it and even though the portrait is worn the color changes still highlight the bust. I love it even though we all know Augustus was a skinny, sickly runt of a man... @Orfew Napoleon sure does look like Augustus there doesn't he?
Wonderful Tetradrachm posted by Severus Alexander!!! I think I have a similar one but from Tarsus and it is completely black :-((( 24 x 26 mm, 14.85 g Obverse: ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΥ ΚΑΙΣΑΡΟΣ laureate head right Reverse:MHTPO[ΠOΛEOΣ] Tyche of Tarsus seated right on rock, holding palm frond; below, half-length figure of river-god Kydnos swimming right; TAP monogram (for Tarsus) in right field. Would you suggest cleaning it? if yes, how ?
