I honestly don't know much about ancients, but this one looks like either a fake or a really barbaric copy...opinions...
Looks familiar. Fake report http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?pos=-12225 Edit: corrected link
Casting bubbles all over. Even if the edges have no casting marks (could have been smoothed) the texture and lack of details is a warning sign.
It is a well known and frequently seen fake. The image above with the blue background is another example. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?pos=-11179
That particular fake has been posted here more than once before and really should be recognized by those who have been here a while. It would be nice if more of us would look in the usual places like the Forvm fake reports before posting even an 'I don't know' reply which is not at all helpful to the new person who came to us for help. I'm with Jay GT4 on this one. If that coin does not 'look familiar' it should. I know some here value this venue as most friendly but we are really not helping the newby by holding out any hope, asking for weights or if there is a seam. We need to answer the question exactly as Jay did.
I could not agree more. I check FORVM fake reports and forgerynetwork religiously. All ancient coin collectors should be aware that forgerynetwork also has the IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits, which is not available anywhere else that I am aware of. The answer is all too often already in one of those databases. Peter
The IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits entries are all supposed to be in the Fake Coin Reports too, and much of it is. We did receive permission from the IBSCC to add them. Some are missing because the member who added them missed them. If you find one is missing please add it. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/
Sorry Joe, My mistake. I have added a few recently which were missing and will continue to do so as I come across them. Peter
