Recentlt I came across this coin in an auction and the seller had it listed at a certain grade. I was looking for a few people here to help me out on this one. I have already formed my opinion but sure would appreciate yours. Thanks catman
VG8...at least 3 letters of the word Liberty must be readible. A F12 would detail all of the letters in Liberty completely readible.
A very nice VG. Has some elements of a F, but the letters in LIBERTY aren't there. A lock at VG8, maybe a VG10.
VG10 - the L, I, T, and Y are visible. There are some small lines on the obverse that lead me to believe this coin may have been cleaned in the past. I did not see the same marks on the reverse.
The auction states a NICE VF+ The seller has a lot of nice circ 19th century coins fo sale, most are described as 'above average circulated' and have good photos. The prices don't seem to be out of line, either. Looks like he got a little over-enthusiastic on this one. Doesn't look like anyone is bidding VF price.
Thanks everyone...! Thanks everyone, I graded this piece a VG+ and by your responses it seems that, for the most part, we concur. Again I really appreciated your input. catman
Well Catman I would grade this a VG10+ --I can see a few letters of Liberty and some other small detail. Speedy
Gee Speedy, weren't you the guy that said you couldn't grade. Your right on the nose. I graded it a VG+. catman
Well I've been working on it and thought I'd try my hand at this one. Barbers are one coin I like to grade because if you can grade a Barber Dime you can also grade the Barber Quarter and Half eaiser Speedy
Keep working at Speedy., Be careful about getting to much information. When the systems start crashing the grading becomes confusing. Stick to the basic system you have selected. catman
That I would disagree with. Not all coins are graded the same way - there is a lot of information required to be able to grade different coins. I don't think you can ever learn too much or have too much info when it comes to grading. The more you can understand about how and why different coins are graded by different people and/or grading companies - the more good you can do for yourself when it comes to buying them.
