Hello all, I'm new to the forum have been collecting since I was a kid. Now I have five children of my own and been getting back into it putting together collections for them. I have purchased 50 pounds world foreign coins from ECC with some nice results all coins were circulated, as expected. I found quite a few 1800' around 20 and some silver. Enough for me to get the bug again. So here I am I have been reading around and hear some horror stories and some stories that keep me going. Does anyone know of any reputable dealers for world foreign coins in bulk like I said not to worried about the grade more so silver and year hunting. Any information is muchly appreciated. Thanks in advance
You are not likely to find silver in a bulk lot. It is almost always separated out and sold separately. You are more likely to have success with silver by looking for auction labels mixed lots, where you may find a lot of a few silver coins from a specific country at around spot price. As for finding bulk lots of base metals coins, there are plenty on EBay and I have never had one which was really bad. Some are better than others, of course, but to some extent it is luck.
You are right about that sakata I tried the eBay once bought a pound and a half bulk foreign and every coin in it was valuable not to mention it contained alot of silver think over 3 oz on that purchase I was thoroughly pleased. Edited: language ` Please read the rules. Thanks
I got my major bulk from educational coin company unfortunately they stopped doing mixed bulk bags. So the hunt continues.....
If you are serious about getting bulk lots to sort through, your best bet (in the UK at any rate) is a small ad in the local paper. There are still plenty of people with boxes of old low value coins in their cupboards who cannot be bothered with selling online or taking to an auction house. A small ad often prompts them into action and you get some very interesting and varied lots for a fair price, hopefully before some dealer picks out all the goodies!
Thanks Paddy b I'm in California I bet the pickings in the UK are amazing. I might have to look into posting an ad I'm near Mexico never know what's lurking around here waiting to be found.
You should talk to Michael Swoveland at wnccoins.com, who posts as @Aethelred here. I recently acquired several pounds of bulk world coins from him, and have only checked one bag so far. It's a good mix of older and newer coins and I did find one or two stray pieces of (darkly toned) silver, though under most circumstances you shouldn't expect to find much if any silver in bulk bags, as mentioned. In the past, I've found key dates (including a $200-ish Danish coin) in Michael's bulk bags, though obviously that sort of thing doesn't happen very often. (It is at least possible.) @Mark Metzger can also attest to this.
