I get it, but I wasn’t assuming that I would submit it for regrading. Maybe a gold bean, but I don’t see any sense in playing the crack out game. I was just going to appreciate the coin inside the plastic rather than the label inside the plastic.
For a 63 in an old holder if it’s 63 money I’d buy it. It’s obviously better than the grade and the old holders always sell for a premium
...and that’s how it should be. You’re a true coin collector. I like playing the crack out game though and it’s great to have online pictures, so I mostly re-submit coins in old holders.
I have an idea. It just kinda hit me, too. I have been considering putting together a grading set and this coin may be perfect for the job! It’s readily available in lots of different grades, affordable, and come is MS grades from 60 to 66 DMPL. The high end coins may take me a while, but some really great looking coins in lower MS grades are available simply because of how hard the grading services were on this date and M/M. I am giving a presentation to the Elgin Coin Club in May and it would give me some time to get a start before the meeting. @Bman33 you have inspired me in an unexpected way! Thanks again!
That's what I love about the 79S-82S coins. Beautiful Morgans at affordable prices. Morgans for the Masses baby!
The same goes for a lot of the mid to late o mint Morgan. 1883o, and 1885o are especially easy to find beautiful, high grade coins at reasonable prices.
Agreed. It is an obvious 64, although I would not spend the money having it regraded. All of my 1878-1885 cc dollars are GSA/NGC ribboned examples, as the GSAs are consistently more desired, and resell higher.
I believe it's a solid 63. Possible 64, but no more. Too many abrasions and contact marks in the fields and devices. Luster looks strong.
Nice coin. I don't like the spotting on the reverse. I know the reverse is secondary, but with all the coins available, I don't like to get that "cleaning" residue from an improper rinse.
Nice 65. I've viewed thousands of Morgans on HA's site. Based on what I'm seeing in the obverse fields, I think you'll like the luster. Looks strong and deep based on that photo. I do urge you to be patient. Believe me, I know what it's like to want to add to a collection and how it can drive one to make allowances on coins. The dates, mint mark and grade you want to put in your collection are so readily available, you can afford to be picky.
@Bman33 , here's a HA photo of a coin I bought a couple years ago. It's mirrors are deep, almost DPL, but at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse and reverse, it's too frosty. Very little if any contact marks on the coin and in hand looks like it came out of the press yesterday.
Thanks. And yes, patience is key. The coins I've "reached" for because I wanted to add to my collection are my least satisfying pieces. Where else do you look for coins? HA is one of my favorite places, but I have a few more go to sites as well. The problem is learning to decipher each sites photos.
I agree with it being a problem with deciphering photos. I am still trying to figure out if it is just lighting shadows on some coins or if Luster is missing or blotty. I look at Great Collections too. I like it when several items are going in a row because it makes it better for sniping! Ebay not so much.
My 79S and 81S that I won at auction came in today. They are beautiful coins except on my 81S has a big scratch on the holder. Kind of upset. I looked at the photos again on Heritage and the holder scratch is apparent so I can't send it back. Ugh, I'll have to keep trying on the 81S.
