i think they should becuase people really don't want to mess around with them and just throw them on the ground. about 50% of the newer ones are corroded, and bent up and not barely usuable any more. its a hassle rolling them up and dragging them to the bank only to get 50 cents a roll for them, and it would make counting change more easy and faster at checkouts.
Risk vs value :goofer: I won't bend down to pick up a penny. If I threw my back out for a penny I'd never forgive myself. I might bend over for a nickle, dime or quarter, though. I know how this sounds, but don't read too much into it.:rolling: I think the cent should go. Bruce
This is like the millionth thread about this. I think it should stay... for a little while longer anyways.
I pick cents up, all the time. There is a guy, where I work, that throws them on the floor of the lunch room every day. I go around and pick them up. I can't wait for the day that I find a wide AM and rub it in his face....LOL
Keep it and I still pick them up. Hope you get that wide AM roto. One of my best "circulation" finds was "circulating" on the floor. I picked up a solid G4 1914-S.
i would have to say keep it- i think its if would be ever eliminated there would be run away inflation because alot of things are sold to the cents like gas - imagine if gas was sold in increments of 5 cents a gallon now - how about little thing like nails nuts and bolts at the hardware store - alot of things are sold below 5 cents or the 5 cent threshold i remember not so long ago that the kids in school that threw away there pennies were the ones always asking for money - maybe its still true today the ones that throw away there pennies wouldnt give or put anything in - say the salvation army red pot or for charities - alot of organizations are looking for hand outs - i know the boy scouts do a bottle and penny drive for fund raising maybe if those who dont want there pennies and think they are too much of a hassle should give them to ones that need them
No Snowman, you don't get how it works. Prices are still priced in terms of 1 cent, it's only the consumers who have to pay the minor rounding up or down. Gas prices are still priced in terms of cents, no increments or such. It's only in the final bill at checkout that you pay 2 cents more or less. Alternatively if you wish to pay by card, it's still calculated cent by cent. It only makes the life of the cashiers and us customers to carry less cents.
keep it its one of the easiest least expensive(with the exception of a few coins i.e. 1909 s vdb) sets to complete for young collectors
I say keep'em and revalue them to $0.05 and do away with taxes. Bet they'll get picked up then, for awhile anyway because they won't get thrown down anymore. jmo John
Yes, of course the cent should be kept. The dollar should be strengthened so that we NEED the cent again! Who's with me?!?!?! ::marches on Washington alone::
Interesting thought... maybe now is the time to revisit two cent coin. If anything keep the cent around until the 100 year anniversary with a wheatie and then eliminate it or increase its value to two or three cents.
So many things are sold at 19.99 we need pennies. They are an economic mover. Peoples psychology let's them spend 19.99 much easier than they'll spend 20.00. That's my take.
With a 2 cent coin it would become 19.98... even better for the consumer. Point taken and its valid.
True. Which is why in quite a few countries you have prices that end in .69 or .98 etc. even though the smallest coin is, say, a .05 piece. Christian
I think what most people don't get is that rounding ONLY occurs for cash purchases, and ONLY for the total price. It is NOT done for each individual item, and it is NOT done when purchases are made electronically. (debit or credit card) Americans, in general, can't think outside of the box on this matter, because they have had the cent for such a long time, they just can't fathom getting rid of the cent unless they are forced to. Just as they can't get rid of the paper dollar unless they are forced to.
