Earlier today I returned from my first trip to the New York International Numismatic Convention which was also my first trip to NYC. While I picked up four coins that I am very excited to share, what I enjoyed most about the show was having the chance to meet many other collectors, dealers and researchers face to face. The people really made the show worthwhile, moreso than the coins and it was a great experience that I highly recommend attending if you can. The first coin I'm sharing today is a Legion VII denarius of Marc Antony, a coin that really spoke to me as I've been wanting to add another legionary denarius for a while but had trouble finding one that was relatively well centered, relatively unworn and with good metal that I could afford. I knew I wanted this coin as soon as I found it and it's definitely my favorite pickup from the show. Not a lot is known about Legion VII, though we do know that Caesar's Legio VII Claudia was fighting under Octavian so this was likely one of the legions that Antony himself raised. After Actium this legion was likely either disbanded or incorporated into one of Octavian's legions as nothing is recorded of it. Roman Imperatorial period AR denarius (3.79g, 17mm 6h). Marc Antony, triumvir, Autumn 32 - Spring 31 BC, Patrae(?) mint. Praetorian galley right, with sceptre tied with fillet on prow; above ANT AVG; below, III VIR R P C / Aquila between two standards; below, LEG VII. Border of dots. Crawford 544/20; Sear HCRI 357; Sydenham 1224 Privately purchased from Wolfshead Gallery 1/12/2018 at NYINC 2018, ex Dr. Robert B. Beckett Jr. collection, CNG 105, 10/5/2017, lot 754, purchased from Tom McKenna More coins to come as soon as I can get them photographed and properly written up and please feel free to share anything relevant!
Very nice MA Legionary denarius with good details. My example from this legion is considerably off center
The eagle and standards are very very sharp though; close to Mint State really. Not the best day for quality control at Tony and Cleo's mint, but they were busy.
The social aspects are always the best part of the show IMO. I got to have a bourbon with Jordan and chat coins etc.!
I was there on Saturday. It was a nice show to visit. I only purchased some world coins and paper currency. Found 1 nice mint error and did a 9 coin NGC submission.
The second coin I purchased at the NYINC is this denarius of P SVLA - traditionally interpreted as Publius Cornelius Sulla, minted circa 151 BC. Some believe this moneyer to have been the grandfather of the dictator Sulla but Crawford argues that it is more likely that this moneyer is instead an uncle of Sulla's, likely an older brother of the father of the dictator. This coin was reportedly part of one of the CNG Triton I group lots of duplicates from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts collection and came with the MFA's old tray tag. After doing some digging I found that this coin's accession number 32.756, corresponded to a 1932 accession date and in particular, a large group of coins donated by Dr. Malcolm Storer who at one point held the position of Keeper of the Coins for both the Boston MFA and the Massachusetts Historical Society and who is credit with the donation of many coins and medals to the MFA. Roman Republic AR denarius(17mm, 3.66g). Publius Cornelius Sulla, moneyer, 151 BC. Head of Roma right in winged helmet; X (mark of value) behind/Victory in galloping biga right, holding whip and reins; P SVLA below horses; ROMA on tablet in exergue. Crawford 205/1; Cornelia 1 Purchased from Kirk Davis at NYINC 2018, 1/12/2018, reportedly ex CNG Triton I group lot(not pictured), ex Boston Museum of Fine Arts collection, accession no 32.756, donated 1932 by Malcolm Storer The Boston MFA tray tag for those interested:
Nice coins and cool MFA tag! I love coin shows for the ability to see so much good stuff in real life instead of photos. The dealer stories are very enlightening many times too. John
Fantastic example @red_spork! If that coin is any indication of what's ahead you had a really good haul from the show.
That 7th Legion denarius is really attractive, and I like the subtle toning that the P Sulla has. Nice scores!
Very good acquisitions, and the NYC show must be thrilling. I'd like to go there once (although I've visited NYC four times previously, it's never been at that time of the year unfortunately) Q
Congrats on your acquisitions and hope you had a nice time in NYC. I also picked up a RR denarius, my first one actually, but haven't imaged it yet.
