I was comparing PCGS and NGC costs to submit my next batch of US coins. For NGC, I typically go through the fillable PDF form with no issues. The last time I used PCGS, it was through the online submission service. This time around, however, I don't see anything for Mint Error designations. The closest thing is Variety Attribution, but that's not for errors such as struck throughs. Or, do I just select Variety Attribution? Or, is it not allowed for Economy tier submissions? If so, that would be a huge negative for me. Or, do they just auto-charge you if they see a Mint Error (that would be ridiculous). EDIT: I also checked PCGS's fillable PDF and you can't select Mint Error - it's grayed out! And, WOW - PCGS Mint Error assignments cost $65 against NGC's $15!! Does PCGS have that much more of a premium for US coins in auction prices realized - $52 more per US error coin over NGC (after considering economy tier and mint error pricing)? The total Mint Error costs by themselves is greater than submitting it error free! I guess that answers which TPG to send it to... though for the future if I have a 4 figure coin then I'll consider PCGS... Thanks in advance!
The PCGS mint error tier is pricey for sure, it’s the one thing that’s way off from NGC pricing though theirs isn’t exactly cheap either at 45 bucks a coin for regular service. As far as the PCGS online they currently don’t let you do error submissions and I believe they don’t let you do colonial ones online either. Those you need a normal submission forum just like you do for the quarterly specials. I believe I saw they were looking to expand what can be filled out online but I have no idea if they’re going to expend it or not. It would be nice to be able to do any type online.
