Ran across this at a local coin shop and thought it was too cool to pass up. Has anyone seen these before? Trying to get an idea of the age. I am from Iowa though so I may be a bit partial to it!
I have not, that is pretty cool. I have seen a capital holder in the shape of the United States. I basically got it for free with the purchase of the proof set contained w/in it.
That could be an early Capital Plastics holder. The key to "early" is the metal screws. Nowadays they are plastic.
Hey @MMiller750 Interesting holder. Take a close look at the edges. Look for a circle with a W inside. It is hard to see. Also keep an eye out for a line scored across all three layers of the plastic. I ask because Whitman marked many of their holders with the circle & W and used metal screws. Capital scores an alignment line on the edge and uses plastic screws. The holes for the metal screws are a smaller diameter than the Capital holders. My earliest Capital holder is from the early 1960’s and they have used plastic screws since then.
I will have to look for the W inside if I take it apart. I noticed there are three lines going across the center but I can't make anything out, they are really faded. There is just enough to tell they are there.
Sorry, I wasn’t very clear. The circle and W are hot stamped across the edge, not inside on one of the layers. If there are layer alignment marks on the edge and the screw holes are 1/4” then it was most likely produced by Capital Plastics.
