I received a gift in the mail today, just getting around to really looking at it. It is a May, 1970 Hathaway and Bowers Coin Catologue, Vol 3 no 5. Interesting, the address is the Hathaway Bowers building in Santa Fe Springs, CA, I have never seen anything from Bowers that was not from NH. This is WAY before Bowers and Merena in Wolfsboro New Hampshire....another interesting thing, " Mr Bower may be reached evenings...at his home #", those were the days, huh? Now here is something that most collectors ever seem to realize. Coin catalogs of the bigger and better known collections can be even more collectible than the coins contained in them. They often sell for huge prices and I have never even heard of one going down in price. Note - this does not apply to just any catalog, but all of them are valuable.
I can see these being collectible, they are fascinating to read, and I have seen some major cash go out for original clean old Redbooks as well. I guess auction catologues are pretty popular also by the numjber of them for sale on Ebay.
Many years ago I puchased a 1938 proof set from Bowers and for a couple of years they sent me their catalogs for their auctions, very interesting reading and all top line coins. I am glad that I have held on to these old books.
