1857 Flying Eagle Cent - Die Struck Through & DDO??

There's what I believe to be a massive struck through error on the obverse, and another one on the reverse top. Or do you think that this is a planchet flaw? Also, I see doubling with split serifs on at least the "C" of AMERICA - it's definitely a DDO, right?

I've already sent my submission to NGC, so this'll have to wait for the next batch. It'll be submitted with a Mint Error and VarietyPlus designation.

As for a grade, does this sound about right?:
AU-58 if high point is worn down notably on the eagle's chest, or upwards of MS-63

    Thanks in advance!

It's too hard to C anything with the pixels as small as it is. Do you have any more shots? I am definitely digging the strike through. Very cool.

I just bought it yesterday so I'm using the seller's photos.

Maybe the original image is better:

Agreed on shot at MS. I did look at the C. It could be a split serif, or it could also be something else, like a die chip. Hard to tell with the photos, but you picked a great coin.

Maybe it's part of the strike through. It's not attached to the oval section, but it is close by and who knows what was struck through. Great FE. I am not MS as I see wear on the upper wing and a little on the breast. AU-58.

Ok, the coin came in. Is the "C" in AMERICA doubled or Longacre or...?

It was hard to get the lighting right - hope it's somewhat clear.

nice coin!I think you might want to take a closer look at the date it looks like a RPD.I really don't see any doubling on united states of america. But i do see what looks like a die chip on the top of the C.Thanks for sharing.

I just checked the date. Unfortunately, it was just a hit on the "7" that made it look like that. And, on the rest of AMERICA, there looks to be MD except on that "C", so I'll probably just submit it as a variety to NGC and see what they say. Though, it may just be a die chip like you say. Also, it may be an off-center strike but just by a little bit (the reverse is nice and centered).

OK, FS-102 is the closest DDO to the 11 total recognized ones shown (not including the non-error), but I don't see the same type of doubling on the "A" in AMERICA. The bottom of the "C" in AMERICA looks doubled, too. If the top serif doubling in "C" of AMERICA is not a die chip, could this be a new DDO??

Using my USB microscope this time... the scratches you see are on the flip.

Also, there apparently exists an MS-70 1857 flying eagle!

Wow, never expected there to be an MS70! Would love to see it.

Doesn't seem logical for a business strike 160 year old coin to be MS-70.
But anything is possible. I would also like to see a photo. I didn't find any on a quick web search.

Yeah it could be a typo. Even if it was meant to be for MS-69 that would be incredible. Too bad we can reverse search on NGC's certification lookup database.

Unless someone is convinced otherwise, I'll submit this to NGC as a VarietyPlus with a note saying that FS-102 is the closest from what I can see. Based on the photo below, it really does look like the "C" is doubled on the bottom and top serifs. If it's a new DDO, then I'm not sure how that's handled.
