I have an Instagram and follow some coin collecting pages. Some are stupid and for some reason have a lot of drama, and some a really great and include a lot of information. Though i prefer Cointalk to Instagram, i can't say one is better than the other. There are stupid threads on Cointalk and stupid posts on Instagram. You just need to know where to look for good threads/posts.
My only dislike about coin instagram is the vultures trying to unload garbage for premiums and trying to buy stuff for nothing. I had to make clear to a few that I'm sharing coins in my collection not posting them to unload at half value.
Dude, that's 20x face! Heck, take five silver halves into a shop, and you'll be lucky if they offer you $25 for the lot.
Indeed, I guess my statement is too general. This thread is an example of someone from the younger generation getting interested in the hobby and wanting to expand. And what do they get? Dismissal and ridicule because of the the venue they chose to pursue the hobby through. As someone said earlier, if you want the hobby to survive you must engage the younger folks. If you want to do that, you have to utilize social media and stop pushing people away by poking fun at their use of it. This is what I mean by saying people are unwilling to modernize. Whether we like it or not social media is the venue of the future for all hobbies. Look at Reddit for example. Hobby communities there are already huge and growing exponentially.
Maybe. But anyone using social media will face some mockery from people who are "too old" or "too cool" to bother with it. (Fifty years ago, people were grousing about television.) If we want to avoid pushing away newcomers from a particular hobby or venue, I think we just need to make sure there are supportive voices as well, and maybe some mockery for the mockers for good measure. I think we're doing that in this thread.
Really? There was no reference to age in the original post. And to come back to my original statement. I encounter a lot of young adults in my daily life. I see a negative correlation between use of social media and success in the classroom.
Maybe this particular poster is not young, but I see this often with young collectors, please allow the creative license Social media in itself is surely a factor in what I see as decreasing attention spans and a general "dumbing down" of society. Luckily specialty groups and hobby communities seem to be mostly insulated from this among large social media venues.
Instagram is an amazing outlet for coins. I'm on there follow me Jgd_coins. As previously mentioned my collection over the last year or two,90% of it has been off of IG. Id suggest some of you check it out before you judge. Many will be surprised at the great number kf people/collectors/dealers on IG. I personally see it as a another platform to buy coins from. I have a trusted list of people I buy from coins from. Some of them are top registry set owners as well
Just join IG and search PCGS,and from there you can see who follows them(coin account wise) and just start hitting the follow button. Once you get the hang out if,and find the good accounts you'll enjoy it. It's always a pleasure seeing amazing coins. Even if you don't like the younger kids, knowing that they are into coins means that the next generation is collecting which keeps the hobby alive
I’ve had a coin related Instagram account for close to three years now. I had no clue what to expect when I set it up and was very surprised to find out there are thousands of other people on Instagram with coin related accounts. In fact, I would not be surprised if there were 10x more active daily users on Instagram with coin related accounts than there are here on CT. I’m not trying to bash CT, I really enjoy this site, just trying to make a point that if you refuse to embrace another coin related platform just because of the negative connotations associated with social media then you’re really missing out on a lot of coin related images and information.
I definitely recommend checking out the coin collecting community on Instagram. People post all sorts of different types of coins, ranging from beginner coins to coins that are worth more than most people’s houses. My account name is nsp_coins if you care to check it out.
I don't even know what it would take to create an account. Would I need to buy a cell phone or can I do it from my desktop? Not that I have plans to do it: just curious.
