My least favorite is definitely plugged. Not only was the coin damaged, but then a poor attempt was made to fix the damage. Every plugged coin I've seen just looks like a flimsy piece that could've been created in high school shop class. I don't even mind holed coins that much as they are what they are.
I had purchased my 2nd gold coin ever from a Pawn Shop in my old neighborhood. I sent it to NGC and got a UNC DETAILS... Removed From Jewelry Good thing is that it's at least real gold
Not necessarily a poor job. There were 1795 dollars officially plugged at the mint that are not easily identified.
Nothing worse than a coin with a staple scratch. The others were done purposely by non-collectors. Staple scratches come from careless people that know better... or should know better.
You forgot "All of the above" in your poll. All details grades are equivalent in my book: avoid like the plague.
I'll take a good plugged over a holed. Especially if it was a contemporary plug job, or at least a long time ago. A holed coin is an incomplete coin, IMO, and that was maliciously damaged (although the reason may not have been malicious), and left like that. At least with a plugged coin, someone, somewhere, cared enough about it to try and bring it back to it's original state. I've seen some coins detailed out as plugged, and it's nearly impossible to see the plug. There was one like that posted here on CT not long ago, a Bust Dollar IIRC.
I've always thought whizzed coins are the worst because they have been maliciously altered in an attempt to deceive collectors.
Also, ED (Environmental Damage) would be my choice for what type of details I prefer. ED is not caused by intentional malice to a coin, but happens 'naturally', although it can be extremely devastating to a coin. While I wouldn't choose an ED coin over a 'straight' coin, I don't look at ED as something done to the coin, but as something that happens to a coin. If that makes any sense.
Bent most likely if I have to pick just one, but like a real bend not a tiny one you have to look for.
I can handle occasional light cleaning or mount removed and environmental damage if not too severe. Holed bothers me more than plugged. But you missed the trifecta of no go. Whizzed. severely damaged or gouged. Or tooled
And it all depends on the coin. Would I want an ihc in a details grade no way. A chain cent or 1793 liberty cap absolutely. The rarer the coin the more I’ll allow. I’d take a plugged small eagle draped bust half or 1792 half disme
