I agree. There is absolutely no way coin collectors, as a group, are smarter than the average person.
Arrogant or the cold hearted truth? How many people do nothing but sit on their phones for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat.... Hell how many husbands and wives at restaurant for goodness sales sit around from each other and they do is look at their phones.... Enough social media... I'm not in any social media except for this site and I get through my day just fine
I just visited 'coin community' IMHO.. I didn't like it I'm going to invite them to come see CoinTalk!
Yeah but those people are the extreme it's generalizing to talk down an entire platform because of the extreme few who wither away their lives on their phone. Its like people condemning the entire ebay platform because there are some bad sellers there. I haven't opened facebook in like 3 years and dont waste time on my phone. I do scroll through instagram when bored and look at everyones nice coins...I can't view the ability to do that as anything other than a huge positive to the hobby.
To keep this hobby going you need to get young people interested. Instagram is a way to get the youth looking at some coins and building an interest. You have to use what the majority of the population uses, and that’s the various forms of social media. I also collect arrowheads and I’m a member of several artifact groups on FB. There are so many people that use these that there is so much more you can learn about a particular hobby!!!
I've met smart people on Twitter/Instagram/Facebook, and I've met dumb people on Twitter/Instagram/Facebook. I've met smart people flipping burgers at McDonalds, and I've met dumb people flipping burgers at McDonalds. I've met smart people here on CoinTalk, and I've met some really dumb people here on CoinTalk. No, coin collectors are *not* necessarily more intelligent than average. I've found that making assumptions and statements like this is a mark of a dumb person.
Wurx. Wasn't it George Bernard Shaw who once suggested that the word "fish" can be spelled "ghoti" (gh as in enough, o as in women, ti as in nation)? As for Instagram, if people want to use it, fine with me. Just be aware that, like WhatsApp, it is owned by and probably shares data with Facebook. Christian
With all due respect, that's a rather foolish position to take. Just because one doesn't wish to participate on the newest venues, this doesn't mean they're unwilling to modernize. Personal preference still matters, and groupthink isn't necessarily a good thing. We all have our own reasons for our individual involvement in this hobby. What works and/or is best for you isn't necessarily true for the next guy. Bravo!
I joined last year. I've made a few sales and purchases off there. Sold one today, actually. Also, finally found a 1927 $2 1/2 toner for my toned Indian set. I have a little over 1,000 followers in less than a year, which is pretty neat. Here is my page: https://www.instagram.com/elizabethtown_coins/ And here is the Indian I bought raw, then had graded:
Whatever works for a person is whatever works. It doesn’t make a bit of difference what medium it’s in.
