Hello - this is my first post ever on a chat board, so please forgive me if I mess up. I am extremely new to coins, but found this on a worn 1957 D Jefferson nickel with a strange mint error on the back. Its an upside down "AM" just above the dome on the back of the coin. I would appreciate any help someone could give me on what I have. I'll post photos if I can figure out how to do it. Thanks.

Looks like a counter stamp, someone punched it into the coin. Also, welcome to CT! It's a nice find but doesn't add any value to the coin, but, still cool!

    First, welcome to the neighborhood!

It looks like someone tried to hammer another nickel into the reverse of your coin. I wouldn't consider this a counterstamp, just post-mint damage (PMD).

Thanks for the input - I see exactly what your talking about now. Just didn't know if it was caused during the minting. It came from a bunch of old nickels my grandfather left me - it's been sitting in a tin can for about 40 years. Thanks again.
