Hello. A friend have this coin and i want to sell but we don't know is the coin is authentic or replica because is a very rare half dollar. He don't remember how he got the piece. What's your opinion? Thanks in advance.
looks fake. not sure what the grade it is ? here are some completed Ebay auctions... link: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=south carolina half dollar&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc&_trksid=p2045573.m1684
I know that @juantrillo has been a member here longer than I have, so I'm not talking about him ;-) But... When newbies (and I don't place myself much above them, don't get me wrong) post coins asking if they are real or fake, and people tell them why they are fake... if they are just using the data to refine their counterfeiting process... is there a way to stop that? Do you think that happens or should I take off my aluminium foil hat?
I was thinking it looks like a crude casting job. It's hard to say exactly with the degree of jpg artifacting in the picture, but some of those small voids look like casting bubbles.
Absolutely fake. Look at how the cross-guard of the sword comes in front of the right edge of the building to our left on the real one in post #5. Contrast that with both the fact that the same thing doesn't happen in post #1, as well as the fundamental crudeness of that building. 100% certain - not legit.
Thank you all for your opinions. It's obvious that it's a fake piece. Calligraphy is also something different from the authentic coin. It's a shame for my friend...
This is a VERY good question, one I have struggled with for years. I do know many are from the "don't let information spread too far" school of thought. That rubs me so much the wrong way, it's hard to even express how much. I am a "transparency junkie" who is pre-wired to let information flow as far, wide, and fast as it can. Why? Because misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation flow like cheap wine on the Internet; it's about time truth gets off its butt.
I completely agree. Education is important in all walks of life. I don't believe ignorance protects anything. Lets make the bad guys work harder.
On the bright side... The condition of the coin would have made it not worth much, and it's not a rare coin, so... if your friend wanted a genuine example in nice condition, he can pick one up for about $100.
Sure, I'll PM you an answer. Edited . . . on second thought, after reading all of the above posts, a PM hardly seems necessary.
The 'S' mintmark looks like a snake, and the relief is way too high. The small lettering is not precise - some letters are not the same size or not in line. Definitely a counterfeit copy
