What will they do with the quarter in 2022?

Nothing official has been announced yet. As I see it, there are 3 possibilities:

    1. Extend the "America the Beautiful" series
    2. Begin a new series with multiple designs per year
    3. Return to a traditional unchanging design...possibly a new Washington design

My guess is, #1 or 2 will be the answer.

IIRC, the Mint has expressed a desire to extend the series another 10 years

I thought I had heard that as well...but I couldn't find a source for it.

Them wanting to do so and authorizing legislation are two entirely different things. The law must happen for the series to be extended.

This was discussed AT LENGTH at the October 2016 Mint forum in Philadelphia, and I was on this particular working group. The current law allows, but does not require, the Secretary of the Treasury to do a second round of ATB quarters, absent subsequent legislation.

If he chooses NOT to do so, and there is no more legislation, the default "permanent" reverse is to be an image of "Washington Crossing the Delaware", hopefully with a random bald eagle in the background. (Okay, that last bit about the eagle is all me.)

    Thanks for the clarity, Kurt

so we get another Quarter Dollar with Washington on heads and tails...

The consensus of our working group was to allow each state to suggest an invention, not an inventor, that was done in their home state to honor. The recommendation was met with a big honkin' yawn.

They'll make it with a face value of probably 25 cents.
    and It will be Round.

Wood on both sides, too. The boat and George's dentures.

When I suggested we go back to the 1932-1998 heraldic eagle reverse, at least for a few years, they looked at me like I had three heads. The Mint people can't even PROCESS such an idea.

I thought they were going to slap my other two heads right in the mouth.

I don't think we should go backwards, either. I'll ask again, Can we just design a new Quarter?

Washington on the front and random first names on the reverse...... sort of like Coke is doing on cans and bottles. Infinitely collectible!
