After returning my earlier Alexander III quarter stater to Roma because it was a reproduction, I finally snared myself this one. Lifetime or early posthumous issue
Well done Wreath Crown Like I stated in earlier post, I am really glad that you also collect ancients. I am surprised that an auction house as famous as ROMA would have had a Alexander III reproduction in their auction I would have thought something like that, should have never got past their validation check. I am glad all turned out in the end for you.
I had it sent for grading as it was supposedly a nice looking specimen. Came back not gradeable Roma took it back without any questions.
Wonderful scores!! Among so many others, I'm always on the prowl for a Tyrian shekal that I like and can afford---looks like you beat me to it
Thanks Mikey ......looks like you had a late morning on Boxing Day You snooze..... Not bad for a combined cost of $1,400 for both, I thought What do you reckon??
For both? That's a great price!! So many are offered at nearly that price for a single example ($800-$1,000+ each) and in very rough condition.
Yes Mikey for both...I thought it was a bit of a steal too coz they usually sell for at least $1,000 for very tired looking examples. I guess if I sell one in future at a reasonable price, the second one should cost me next to nothing. I also managed to pick up a very rare date CY 137 = AD 11/2 earlier in 2017 of which there is apparently only one other example on CoinArchives. I did a bit of research and found this to be a rare date which achieved a very decent price at auction. I had posted it earlier on CT but here it is again Hope you like it. Cheers Najib
I would like an honest opinion on the rarity and desirability of the last Shekel I posted above from the experts on this forum. I paid approximately $1,900 for it but believe that, based on historical prices, it could be worth quite a bit more. This kind of confirms that it is a very rare date: https://coins.ha.com/itm/greek/anci...-32146.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515
I'll be very interested in what those specializing in these coins have to say. I'm vaguely aware that particular dates, especially those struck and circulating during the lifetime of Christ have special appeal and the demand is extraordinary resulting in eye-popping prices realized---and those in high grade can go even higher. Personally, I chased one like that just above more than a year ago---but of overall lower grade and not the precise date--- and backed off once it went to $1,200 and sold for $1,500 hammer. Definitely out of my league at this point.
