I got this a couple days ago but had a bit of trouble on which RIC it is. It was my 2nd choice in the auction but should have been my first. It seems a bit harder to find than the other I was going for (which I already have 2 of). It was also listed as 32mm which would have been awesome, but I figured it was just a typo which it was. It has some faint silvering but what you see it the pic is mostly glare. 23 mm , 5,17g. DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right, A behind. FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO Soldier spearing horseman, Phrygian helmet, sitting on ground, arm(s) up, Star in left field AQS Dot in ex. RIC Aquileia 153 ?? Feel free to post any FH from Aquileia, or any other mint.
RIC is a bit vague but at the bottom of p. 328 the type is given as per your coin for examples in the previous issue RIC Aquileia 147 as my example below. For RIC Aquileia 151-157 it states the type is as 26 which must be a mistake as 26 is a GLORIA EXERCITVS - Two soldiers type. I would assume that It follows as the same type as the previous issue as there is no evidence otherwise. I would therefore make your coin RIC Aquileia 153. I am unable to find any other example from this issue on acsearch, Danes collection or wildwinds to confirm or refute my hypothesis. Lovely coin and glad you got it. Regards, Martin
You guys have great coins, I have been robbed of many Aquilea Mint coins in past auctions, recently a perfect Solidus/ Constantius II. Also from Theodosius I/ Gratian/ Valens/ Valentinian I Its the one mint I still need. John
You and Doug think alike as he said the same. I found out I had RIC vol 8 on pdf on my pc a few days ago (can't remember where I downloaded it) and start looking through it. Danes PDF lists 153 with the wrong reverse.
RIC lists it as common, but I guess it much more rare. According to Curtis Clay, Bastien only knew of 3. I guess if im going to continue collecting FTRs, I should invest in some books.
RIC VIII and Bruck at a minimum. I see no need for LRBC. In many cases there is a sale catalog that is as important as the big name references but I am not aware of a great collection of FH coins that got a catalog. They get "no respect". My often stated opinion: If a catalog number is important to you, you should buy the catalog and not try to find a back door. Lists like Wildwinds are great for finding things but once found, they need to be checked against the real thing to avoid making a fool of yourself. A number like "RIC 123" means nothing unless you understand why the coin was 123 and not 124 or a dozen other 'close but no match' options.
Maybe when one of us FTR collector passes we will have a nice sale catalog. Though the ones that are still alive would probably not be so happy to own one.
