Nice Byzantine coppers! And the Syracuse copper isn't bad either. Overall, a great selection of coins. Congrats on a year well done. With all of these 2017 posts, maybe I should do one as well. Hmmm...
Great selection of coins Even though we've seen a bunch of them popping up lately, I do like the Tabaristan drachm (the others aren'tbad either ) Q
Thanks all for the additional comments! Now that I think about it, I wish I had put the Rome half-follis before the octobol, but oh well. The yearly gold payments were ended by Marcian upon his ascension in 450 AD. Including the initial year that's 9 years or 6300 pounds of gold! Makes me wonder what eventually happened to all that. I'm sure some were most likely melted. Perhaps a Hunnic hoard of gold with at least some of the tribute coins will be found someday Here's the full thread: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/uh-oh-i-cleaned-a-popular-coin.298999/
Call the Pope because you performed a miracle on that Tiberius denarius! Wowza. As for your list, of course I gravitate to the Ptolemies but it looks like you had a good and broad collecting year!
Yes, thanks for noticing! Its a 1968 50 centavos; the obverse depicts General Santander (who, as depicted here, kind of resembles Augustus to me ). Born in the states but my heritage is Colombian so I felt like using the coin as my avatar
Thanks so much for showing us your new coin additions, so glad you had a fantastic coin year I am still looking for a AV Solidus from Theodosius II/ there are many reverse types. I really like Colombian coins from Colonial issues to the Gran Colombia/ Neuva Granada/ Colombia. Here is a "modern" issue depicting the magnificent ocelot on obv. General Cipriano on rev. This was one of 24 gold coins struck for the "Wildlife Conservation" series. Twenty-four Countries took part, @ with 2 Silver/ one gold coin.
