1928 S Improper Cleaning?

    Happy Sunday,

I’ve found a 1929 S and it seems too shiny to be from 1929, especially when I compare to others from the period. Would you consider this penny to be improperly cleaned or is it AU? What do you look for when trying to analyze improper cleaning?

    Thanks to all!

Looks AU, I might be wrong, but it does not look cleaned.

Can we also see a picture of the reverse? I'm no expert at this but it seems alright to me.

    Thanks,

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

It doesn't look cleaned. It looks "shiny" next to the other one because the D is a low grade coin. The S is a higher grade and still shows luster. It looks perfectly normal for an EF-AU coin.

    V. Kurt Bellman Yes, I'm blunt! Get over your "feeeeelings".

I would bet, @Speeksoft, that if you could somehow assemble similar albums from collectors of similar seriousness, you would find MANY cases in which their 1929-S is far superior to their 1929-D or EVEN their 1929 Philly. My primary Dansco book is the same way.

I believe SOMEBODY had several rolls of 1929-S pieces squirreled away literally for decades and they have slowly been released piecemeal into the market in more recent years. I still see lots of nice 1929-S cents in dealer non-slabbed inventory. Far fewer Philly and Denver ones.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Found it in a bag full of ‘29s my grandpa left, soon as I saw it’s luster I thought for sure it had been mistakenly sorted. But not his time!

Would you call this a red or r/b? Why?

Also, to expand my knowledge: what signs should one look for that a coin has been “improperly cleaned”?

    Thanks!!

I call it RB because it has much more brown than red showing. Cleaned coins show rub lines or debris in the nooks and crannies, but the rest of the coin looks clean of debris. Most cleaned coins look dull or lusterless in my opinion.

An improperly cleaned cent will look orange. Yours appears red-brown.
Other cleaned coins will show scratches from the cleaning.

Not cleaned, appears to be AU. Next time, post pictures of BOTH sides for us.

I like it as an AU-58, it's a really nice coin. $15-20 coin as it is. DO NOT CLEAN IT! Leave it nice and crusty how it is. It has an original, natural look to it.

I think id 2×2 that one and put a more circulated one in its place. After time it will loose any red remaining. Nice coin!!!

They can't shine them up like that. That's a perfectly-good coin. I'm not seeing wear on it.

1929S AU for sure. 1929D train wreck for sure, rubbed with a cloth to many times. Lol.
