Is this steel webbing worth slabbing?

I have a 1943 P and 1943 S steel cent slabbed by PCGS with an MS67 grade CAC stickers (just need a CAC 1943 D PCGS at same grade...help!). I also sent in a beautiful 1943 D/D (the big one) to them.I would also like to add a 1943 blank and a planchet (slabbed) but don't have either.

Anyway, I am going to make my own acrylic holder to display these slabbed coins and wanted to add this steel webbing. Is this worth getting slabbed? PCGS said they would slab it when I called ($60 +20 for enlarged holder).

  3. I would do it. It is a unique item, cost is minimal, and slab will provide some element of protection/authentication. TC

While cool, it is not unique . . . I saw one perhaps ten times that size yesterday at FUN. It was so large that the dealer was trying to figure out how to carry it back home without damaging it.

I get it's not unique, but what's your opinion on slabbing it?

Since it appears to be a little larger than would fit in a standard slab. I'd probably do something a bit controversial . . . may be even sacrilegious to some.

Getting a special holder made to house this webbing means it will always be less than convenient to carry / display than are standard holders for individual coins. That being the case, I'd look into what size it would need to be sheared down to in order to fit into a standard holder (less the pliable coin insert). If the loss in size would not be all that significant, I'd probably make that concession, so as to make it that much neater.

I've always disliked the cumbersome oversized holders and, as badly as I've wanted some of the errors in them, I've never bought one because I considered it too large.

Now watch everyone rebuke me . . .

I don't think your suggestion is a bad one. However, I am making a custom acrylic holder to then put my slabbed steel cent stuff inside (that's right...a slab for a slab!) It will look something similar to a Capital Plastics holder, but totally designed by me. I can also engrave on the plastic and put a very brief explanation of why this year was steel. It will have the 3 (p,d,s), my d/d, the webbing, a blank and a planchet. Hopefully even an off-centered one for a total of 8 slabbed items. The display will be 12x24 inches.

Okay, I now fully understand your goal. Makes sense to me.

Sounds like a nice project and if mine I would go for it. Very nice piece of mint history that not everyone has.

Considering how reactive zinc is when exposed to air, particularly moist air, if you want to keep it do the "slabbing" thing.
