Picked this up a while ago in a basement slab. I think it's been dipped. May have a light cleaning, as under certain lighting angles, I think I see tiny hairlines.

Be that as it may, what grade would you put on it? Luster is full, across Liberty's face and the eagle as far as I can tell.

I would say the picture suggests a 63-64 coin (I would be conservative and say 63).

Is it that dark (black beauty) or is it just the photo?

It's the photo. It's very white. I was experimenting with lighting when I shot this.

Makes sense...if it looked like the photo in hand, I would find it even more interesting. I think someone on the PCGS forum was also seeking a black toned lustrous Peace Dollar. Still I think it’s a nice coin, especially if the price was in line with the holder (maybe a candidate for the holder premium thread ;)).

New pics. I guess there is some toning to it, but it's barely noticeable in hand. The photos really bring out the toning.

    And while we're at it...

Noticed this die gouge (?), but I can't match it on VAMWorld. Anyone know what VAM this is?

MS63, slight chance it would grade AU58.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I don't see the hairlines in your pictures - if there are cleaning hairlines, this will be UNC details.

Without hairlines, this tops out at 62.

MS62 at best.... The first pictures appeared black and that would be bad... glad you posted the second set....

I will agree with mid AU. 55 sounds good. Straight grade— not details.
