In keeping with the sister post (Most Under-Rated/Collected Coin) what is IYO the most Over Rated Coin on the market today. A coin which defies all logic as to why it's so collected, costly, and valuable to own. My guess is the 1995-W American Silver Eagle.

    What's yours???

Any 'MS-70' modern coin, IMO. I just can't see these 'ultra high-grade' coins holding up in the future compared to the keys, semi-keys, and true condition rarities.

I would have to say Lincoln Cents, which, with their high mintages relative to other series, have got to be considered overvalued. That being said, I enjoy collecting them and would love to have a 1909S VDB in my folder.

ok, I agree wholeheartedly with Jhonn, and could not disagree more with gopher29, but IMHO the most overrated and overvalued coin defying all logic as to why it's even valuable or collected is the 1950-D Jefferson nickel. They are available by the ROLLS in UNC and you almost never see one that's worn below a high-end XF. That said, I love the Jefferson series as can be evidenced by many of my posts, just think that this particular modern issue has been hi-jacked by hoarders leaving it anything BUT scarce.

Hmmmmm, I wonder how the statehood quarters will compare in the future???

I think most Modern Errors are WAY overrated. To me, they have little numismatic value and no historical value.

They have great educational potential in that they could be used to illustrate the minting process. But that potential is rarely realized because the reason they are of interest is the "something for nothing" mindset - "I just found a great rarity in a roll of Prez dollars.".

Don't get me wrong - I'm not dissing roll-searchers who are looking for key dates, or making a set from circulation. That's all cool.

But I just can't get excited about these modern Prez dollars with smooth edges.

I think it also shows the worst aspects of E-Bay and TPGs, kinda like the First Strike thing. An artificial attempt to "invent scarcity" where none really exists. An artificial market.

At the risk of being scorned, I'll say the 09sVDB Lincoln. For such a high mintage, relative to a lot of other series, the prices are just rediculous. I have many Bust Half pieces with mintages less than half that of the 09SVDB that I paid 1/12 the price for. I realise the Lincoln cent collection is the everyman collection, but at those prices, few will ever be able to finish the set.

I agree. I have a nice 1950 D for my type set, and I think I purchased it for a whopping $18. Furthermore, in a Whitman Jefferson nickel folder I came across recently, basically every coin in it graded XF or below, with most grading F. However, the 1950 D was a gorgeous slider! I think the only true 'key' to the Jefferson set is the 1939 S in MS-63 or higher, but definitely not the '50 D.

I think most of the modern commemoratives [$0.50 and $1.00 coins] are very high priced compared to their numismatic value. Some of the gold commems might be fairly priced.

My pet nomination for this thread are those highly advertised "First Strike" coins...
