On the fourth day of the new year I acquired a silver Byzantine coin. It's of less than medium condition, but I liked it so much because it is the first kind of coins which I purchased. I don't know the attribution though.
I've been searching for over an hour to find attribution, but it seems I don't know how to start or where to begin in trying to attribute Byzantine silver coins. Any help please. Thanks..
That is not a byzantine coin. Perhaps a late Medieval collector could point you in the right direction.
Maybe something like this? Serbian, Stefan? Check out: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1044055
I believe your coin is actually a holed Venetian grosso of Antionio Venier (1382-1400). The mintmaster's initials are on Christ's left.
You're right Miles. The obverse shows Saint Marc holding the banner to the Doge. This is classical and usual with coins of Venice by that time. Obverse also reads clearly to left : ANTO Venero. Thanks to all of you for your friendly cooperation.
