Here is the newest addition to my type set. Some of you may recall that I posted a different example of this type a few weeks ago. Needless to say, I wasn't pleased with the coin and ended up returning it. Much to my surprise, I found a second example last week and the coin arrived today. So, please grade the following coin and, as you see fit, please also guess what PCGS graded the coin: The pictures are pretty darn accurate, and if anything, the coin is a touch darker in-hand. As always, any comments on the coin -- what you like, what you don't like, why you graded it how you did -- are most appreciated. Have fun...Mike
Mike: Very nice, probably VF. However, 1) is that a scratch or die crack or ? on the reverse from banner into the shield? and 2) is that PVC on the reverse left?
Treas, To answer your questions: 1) Yes, I believe what you are seeing is an old scratch. 2) I do not believe there is any PVC on the coin. What you are seeing is toning. I suspect this coin spent some time in an album and that's the origin of the toning/color. The color is even more pronounced when the light is reflected directly off the coin.
Wow..I just loved that toning. I would say very fine for sure. VF25 is what I think. Great addition to your collection Mike and thanks for sharing!
I'm gonna say VF20. Looks like an old cleaning that is retoning. Maybe F15, but I think PCGS will say VF20.
after looking at the ANA book, i stand firmly behind my F grade. on the obverse, there are little to no drapery lines visible, the and the hair detail and ear are worn smooth. over on the reverse, the arrow ends are worn to a blend, the bulk of the wing details are worn, and the legend is all but worn off. i'd be very surprised if PCGS wentabove F-12. -steve
Fine 12. I think that is what PCGS would give it too. Nice coin there Mike you going to kept this one?
Leadfoot, Nice coin! Thanks for sharing! I am going to say that PCGS graded at F-15 due to the age, Series and condition of the Obverse! It is a shame that there is so much wear on the Eagle and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Frank
