1886 was a milestone date for Zanzibar. Starting in 1884 after the Berlin Conference, European nations began the scramble for African territories. In August 1885 German warships entered the harbor of Zanzibar, and demanded the Sultan cede his mainland territories to Germany. The Sultan asked Britain to intercede. In 1886, Britain and Germany came to an agreement with Zanzibar whereby Britain would receive the territory of British East Africa (i.e. Kenya), and Germany would receive the territories of German East Africa (i.e. Tanganyika). The Sultan maintained control of a 10 mile wide strip of land along the coast of his former possessions. In 1890 Zanzibar would become a British Protectorate.

It seems that the names and borders invented by the colonizing powers kept changing fairly often. I assume the basic tribal groups and their traditional areas remained pretty much the same. 1898 EA 1 pice obv.JPG 1898 EA 1 pice rev.JPG 1911 EA-H 1 c obv.JPG 1911 EA-H 1 c rev.JPG

Thanks. That is the prettiest ZAR coin I have, and the one below is the rarest, with a mintage of only 16,300.
