I have so much to learn. I don’t know anything about “Ironclads” @RAGNAROK so I have saved the article to read later today. Thanks for posting the article. (Is it anything like old ironsides? Nevermind, I will read).

I finally had a chance to read about this legion and some history of it, @RAGNAROK .
I found that there is a renactment of this particular legion in Charleston, S.C. but I couldn’t get the link to work.

I hope @Bing is not going to ship me off to serve in some legion! My mother always used to promise (read, threaten) to enlist me in the French Foreign Legion when I was a disobedient youngster! :(:arghh:

The French Foreign Legion couldn't hold a candle to the Roman legion. In 14-16 AD, Germanicus led a punitive expedition against Arminius, the chieftain of the Germanic Cherusci tribe for his betrayal of Rome which led to the disaster at the Battle of the Teutoburger Wald in 9 AD. Germanicus had 8 legions plus auxiliaries, approx. 50-60000 men in total against Arminius who commanded an estimated 100-150000 warriors. Guess who won and was offered a triumph in Rome? Your first guess doesn't count.

The legions led by Germanicus were:
    Legio I Germanica
    Legio II Augusta
    Legio V Alaudae
    Legio XIII Gemina
    Legio XIV Gemina
    Legio XVI Gallica
    Legio XX Valeria Victrix
    Legio XXI Rapax

Man, how I love this stuff!!!!

@Bing! Yes, I can actually feel how much you love this subject - It is coming through my iPad!! That is wonderful and that makes me eager to learn more about the subject! And I definitely will.

Sooooo, I’m guessing that even though Germanicus had troops somewhere between a third to a half the number Arminius commanded, Arminius got a shellacking?

Thanks for setting out the various Legions, Bing.
    I will read about them.
