Just wondering what you guys and gals consider the ugliest U.S. coin ever put out. I think mine would have to be the Iowa Effigy Mounds America the Beautiful quarter. No reflection on Iowa or the Mounds, which I am sure are great, but it sure doesn't make a very good looking coin. My opinion is worth absolutely nothing. LOL. Post your opinions folks.
I'm getting tired of the US Mint offering contests for fleeting designs that pander to lots of special interests, instead of investing more time and money in re-establishing timeless classic designs for US coinage. Imagine how silly it looks to other nations that we had such long-standing and recognizable coinage for so many years, and now our coinage exhibits so little continuity that it only reinforces the idea that the dollar is spiraling down the drain.
Won't post my comment about the Effigy Mounds quarter every two weeks so see here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/what-will-the-next-quarter-program-be.307198/page-5 Christian
Sorry. I just posted this for the fun of it. Just thought we could have a couple of grins. I didn't mean it as a political statement.
Then again, keep in mind that your circulation coins are low value pieces only (1, 5, 10, 25 cents), and some of them, at least the "pennies", are basically one-way issues. The half dollar and one dollar coins do not circulate, and higher denominations are collector coins only. So it basically makes some sense to, hmm, spice up what you have. And the state quarters did a pretty good job in that regard, I think. It is always somewhat risky to try and repeat a successful program, and the ATB quarters show just that. But(t) ugly? I thought that the SBA dollar had already won that contest. Christian
Come on Guys the 4 year old girl that won the competition tried REAL hard. Here she is with her inspiration now!
Modern day. The sba dollar. I hated them when they came out and feel the same now. 19th c I’m not a big fan of the classic head gold design. I think of all the pre 1900 coins that’s my least favorite. With the barber coinage coming in second. I think of classic designs the gold 2 1/2 and $5 indians would be third. Though to me I don’t like any presidential coinage at all and I think the end of attractive coin designs for regularly circulating coinage stopped with the beginning of that. Favorites are the draped bust coins especially the dollar and half. The trade dollar and the st Gaudens $20
My apologies but I'm sure the great state of Wyoming had much more to offer than the bland design of their state quarter and for todays coinage, the Lincoln Cent. It's bland, flat and with very little detail.
Working with the mint I’m sure will do that to a person. Is that the moron that designed the Iowa Hobo quarter?
The Stella. That's why I threw all of mine away! No, seriously, I agree with Mainebill. When it comes to ugly, the SBA is hard to beat.
I don’t know, I’m torn between the SBA or the ugly child with the ugly baby dollar coin ( Saq dollar). At least the SBA is the doppelgänger of a cool old coin. Hair styles change but never an ugly face.
Come on who can’t love this coin. The Dude just rocks that tiara and his man bun is Ooo so tight. I think Barber along with being generally regarded as a hack as far as his peers were concerned might have been Gay as well. He REALLY was un liked and not respected as a coin designer by his peers and this coin show why. Maybe a little classic Hobo training would have done Barber some good!
NO WAY.....OOPS I guess I don’t see an Adam’s Apple now do I. But I’m still not sure, that chicks a little manly looking to me. Lol. And was the model a woman or...... do you know who it was? Butt ugly chick! That’s for sure.
