Wishing everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2018! Reference annotated Photo Gallery of Britannic coins of the Tetrarchy Consisting of Representative coins cataloged in The Roman Imperial Coinage (RIC), Volume VI Not all inclusive - just coins from my personal collection
Happy New Year to you as well, that is one of the best coin presentations I have seen, fantastic collection.
Thank you for putting all this work in, it's very helpful to have them all laid out by RIC number like that. I think I might even be able to distinguish the early invasion coinage from the Bastien intermediate series now. Does the invasion coinage consistently display the more expansive lettering, as compared with the intermediate series' more compact London style lettering?
Many Happy Returns, @jamesicus! Thank you, as always for your work the site. It’s a real boon to the community at large.
I want to thank everyone for your kind comments, and again wish you all a great 2018 - I hope everyone is successful in enriching their coin collecting knowledge - and find great coins to add to their collection! I have performed the usual “tweaking” to the Gallery page this morning - corrections, additions and incorporation of some of your suggestions. I will continue to update all of my web pages. As has been so often said, web pages are never really finished, they are always Under Construction.
I wish I possessed more “Bastien Intermediate coins” in my collection to study. As it is, I have to rely mostly on the illustrated articles published from time to time on various academic web sites by such scholars as Bastien and Lord Stewartby - and now in the book written by Hugh Cloke & Lee Toone. I think there is a lot more to be learned about these “Intermediates” - information that will come to light as more hoards are discovered in Britain. My observation is that that the “Invasion coinage” inscriptional letterforms are consistently somewhat large and delicate - I have added a descriptive note to that effect on my Gallery page. Thank you for mentioning that point.
What a great resource! The surfaces on those coins in the gallery are beautifully smooth. Really clear and appealing examples.
All coinage information on my Tetrarchic coinage web pages is based on RIC (The Roman Imperial Coinage) Volume VI. Additional and revised reference material, including a new catalog numbering system, can be found in THE LONDON MINT OF CONSTANTIUS AND CONSTANTINE, Hubert J. Cloke and Lee Toone, Spink & Son Ltd, London (2014). The discussions in the following Ancients.info threads contain much in-depth information (plus photos of seldom encountered coins) relating to Britannic coinage and the Tetrarchy. If you have a deep interest in the background of many of the recent developments in the study of this coinage, you may enjoy reading these subjects: Constantius' Boulogne mint Maximianus Herculius, AE Follis - London or Continental Mint? What a fantastic addition to your site James. I never cease to be amazed at the amount of educational material that is produced by the collectors on this site and offered up free of charge like this. I think it really does make a huge difference to the hobby to have this kind of information readily accessible to collectors that might not yet have a library resource for such information.
