Apparently April fools came a little early for me. My excitement seeing a large silver looking coin changed to disappointment real quick. It was only about two inches deep, but I was detecting in the snow today and the ground in that spot was completely frozen. I literally had to punch through the ice/dirt with my Lesche hand shovel to get it out and scraped the one side pretty bad. I see these go for about $6 on Ebay so apparently no silver either, so that doubles the disappointment. Was still an interesting find though.
I think it is still silver. 2 Obverse sides stuck together. What kind of Metal Detector do you use and what reading does it give for your found Peace Dollar?
Hi Paddy, I use the Garrett Ace 350. It did ring up at the highest reading which is usually silver, but if I remember correctly, the clad JFK half I found last year rang up the same. Bigger metal objects seem to ring up like that on this detector for me. I definitely hope you are right though.
Yes I wouldn't throw that one back. It is still a score. Report back when you know what the metal is.
Very cool find! I found a Morgan drawer pull, detected in an old school. They really get your heart racing, only to find out it's not what you thought it was.
Looks like the coin from Batman The Dark Knight. 1922 Peace dollar with 2 obverses. And one side is intentionally scratched. Lots of reproductions on the market, like this: Same scratch pattern... unlikely you achieved it accidentally with a hand shovel.
@COCollector that is a great catch, I would never have noticed that. It definitely makes me feel better to know that I wasn't the one who scratched it all up
I will definitely keep it. I looked at the ebay listing for these and says the coin is not silver. I weighed it as well and mine is 23.5g compared to what a real peace dollar is at 26.73g.
I have one like that somewhere here with all the cuts like that on it but I believe mine is pot metal or aluminum, It has a much darker color to it.
It's prob. not silver, however, if 2 coins were used in creating this 2 headed coin, weight is not a reliable factor, because you don't know how much weight was cut from the tails side. Since there are other examples of this exact same thing, not silver, but pretty cool.
