For the past 5 or so years, I have had a coin style stuck in my head. It is the 1795-1797 $10 US gold coin, the small eagle version with the wreath in its beak. To me, this coin ranks with any in history for beauty and allegorical theme. One problem, it costs a not-so-small-fortune! I have decided to buy/sell/trade coins as a dedicated hobby in order to amass enough cash to buy one someday, knowing full well that it may take a decade or more. Is anyone else working towards that one special piece that seems unattainable? Mike
Sure do. Complete a full set of morgans, silver washingtons, and buffalo nickels. I imagine it's going to take at least 20 years (at least with my current budget ).
I'm with Bonedigger on this one. Though there are some coins I strive to someday own, I'm not currently socking money away to purchase them. I'm just buying what I like as it comes along. It's cool you are focussed on a goal though. Hope you succeed. Guy~
I have a goal of putting together a full set of wheat cents ranging in VF-XF, then later on when I come by more money maybe put together a BU R set. But of course that's going to be a LONG way down the road. Phoenix
My current pursuit is a complete set of San Fran Minted Type II, III Double eagles and continue the double eagles series on in a date set (random Mint mark) of Saints.
I don't think I would call it a goal but I've always said that someday my collection will be sold to pay for my first house. When talking about goals, or what I would like to do here are some: Learn as much as I can about coins--there is sooo much to learn. Share my little bit of knowledge with ones who need help. Complete my PF66 Franklin Set. I'm just a handfull of coins away--but I'm getting picky Work on a compelte set of AU/BU Washington Quarters Buff Nickels Jefferson Nickels, along with the varieties, RPM's OMM, etc, etc. Speedy
I think that's cool, Mike. Yes, that's an amazing piece. I would love to have one, but not holding my breath ! I'm kinda like coleguy - I have several interests, specifically Indian gold, 19th century type, half cents, and large cents. I get as educated as I can, hit the show, and go trolling. I'm opportunistic. I think it's a great idea to buy / sell / trade. Great way to learn. Good luck !
My goal: To own on e of every coin ever minted. Since I am not Bill Gates, I will just try to own every Barber dime, quarter & half dollar ever minted.
When I have one coin of every Roman Emperor, British Monarch, and 17th century Europea ruler I will be content....but this is a very vauge aim (I just buy anything I like !) Maybe in the next fifty years !
My goal is to have all of the 15 different U.S. sets that I'm working on completed in 3 years so I can start more.
As well as peace, Ikes, SBAs, Sacs, prez's, jefferson nickels, V nickels, shield nickels, roosie/merc/barber dimes, kennedy/frank/walkers/barber halves, SLQ and barber Qtrs, Flying eagle, indian head and lincolns cents, Unc ASE and Proof ASEs. morgan, peace, Buffs, shield, IHCs, All the barbers and the SLQs are the ones I am working on now. Lincolns I am waiting until 2010 or 11 to go back to and finish. Maybe after the 2009 hoopla the prices will restabilize
my goal is to finish my roosevelt dime book. i'm the kind of collector that buys what i like, and buys books an put the coins i like in them and try to make a set out of it.
I am with several of you, having a ton of very cool coins but no real focus. Over the years, I have done well on my trades but I never socked the profits away with a goal in mind. It kind of bugs me that I don't have a hallmark piece- you know, the one showstopper. If I want one of these guys, it will take 10's of thousands to buy it and my wife would kill me for using the family money for a coin like that. So, here we go. 10 years (or more) and counting. Mike
Mike, Don't defend yourself. I like the idea of a "goal". I had posted a thread a few months ago about "clutter" which is the habit to collect what catches our eye. Yes, it is cool and it adds to the variety, but the world of coin/currency collecting is a very deep sea and you risk to never have anything but a hodgepodge of assorted numismatic items. I admire the guys on here who have completed sets and especially those who have completed them in such and such grade. Unfortunately, a lot of us start out and life or money or other interests leaves a shoebox full of half-completed collections at the back of the closet. Mike - Go for it! Collecting so that you can eventually put it all together to get the holy grail is cool!
Mike, It's a lofty goal and I hope you someday attain it. I have "pseudo" goals as it were and have accomplished one with my higher grade collection of business strike Two Cent Pieces. Now I'm dabbling with the 3 cent silver, nickel and 20 Cent series'. I'll assemble the best sets I can. Don't see myself selling them all off for one REALLY rare piece but I know of people that have. Guess I kinda like the clutter and varied history of my collection.
My goal is to have every American Eagle from 1986 thru present in Gold, Silver and (Platinum 1/10th and 1/4 oz Plat only) in all denominations. I also have a paper goal of every US Note printed from 1914 through present from the New York Fed Reserve Bank only! I know these are huge goals...and with gold so $$$$$ these days I have all but stopped buying it for now! One other goal is a type set of Gold from the year 1902, 100 years before my Son was born in MS63! I have two of the coins the $2.5 and the $10 gold.... My final goal will be to die and be remembered as one of the Top Collectors of New York Paper money and pass down a collection that will rock the socks off ya! Whew!! I am done now... RickieB
1. Complete an accurate inventory of what I've currently got. This is so that when I kick off whoever gets the collection can deal with it better. And at 65 I'm closer than I'd like to be. 2. Finish current sets: -- One coin to go for a slabbed set of silver Roosevelts. -- Two coins to go for an XF or better set of Coronet half cents. -- Lots of coins to go for an XF or better set of Capped Bust half dimes. -- Three coins to go for an XF or better type subset (actually two of the coins are VF) 3. Find my complete set of Liberty V nickels (grading Good with the early keys AG and the '12-S in Fine.) I haven't seen it for years; afraid it it might have walked off. 4. Get two key IHCs in MS (the 1877 and 1909-S). Got the 1908-S; my only IHC.
