I'm looking to acquire a few Susan B. Anthony dollar coins from the year 1983.

So I have 2 questions regarding these.

Question 1, were they made during that year, i have one from 1979, but I'm not sure how long they were made. If they were minted in 1983, does anyone know of a descent source online where I could get a few? I'm not a major collector, but i do tend to play with coins (rolling across knuckles and such) and the size of these coins is perfect, and it'd be cool to have a few from the year of my birth.

    Any help is appreciated

    Thanks!

Sorry. They were only made in 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1999.

As to were to get them, for your purposes, I would just ask at the bank. It may take more than 1, but I would guess you will find some there. If you really must go online, eBay. However, you will probably be buying a collectors coin and then paying for shipping on top of that.

Sniff, like they skipped the one year i wanted :p

    Thanks any way.

Out of curiosity, I seem to recall that there were 2 types of silver dollars out there, (tho more are possible, i don't know much) One was the Kennedy one, and I'm not sure what the other one was called. I remember my grandfather giving me one of those from the year of my birth, but it was so long ago, and that coin lost so long ago that I'm not sure what to look for. Any help again would be appreciated.

    Thanks again! :)

In 1983 there were no dollar coins minted. Kennedy has been on the half-dollar, not the dollar, since 1964 . They were made of 90% silver only in 1964, and then in 40% silver until 1970. Since then they have been clad copper-nickel over a copper core, just like the dime and quarter. In 1983 and a few other years a proof version in 90% silver was produced, with an "S" mint mark.

There have been more than a half-dozen different silver dollars in US history. The most recent are
    • The Morgan Dollar, minted from 1878-1904, and again in 1921
    • The Peace Dollar, minted from 1921-1928 and 1934-35, and
    • Proof silver clad Eisenhower Bicentennial dollars in 1975-76 (all dated 1776-1976).
Susan B. Anthony, Sacagawea, and the ongoing Dead Presidents series of dollars have never been minted in silver.

hi gerrerd. sounds like you need a red book. there's plenty of info in them and it'll tell you what coins were minted when in addition to many other interesting tid bits. oh and welcome to the boards!

Typically, the redbook is easily found at most libraries. From there, you can decide if you want to buy one.

I Like Trees I mean coins with trees.

    What about a 199 proof?

Was not a proof minted of the Susan B. in 1999? I was wondering this to myself the other day.

Proofs yes - 1978S, 1980S, 1981S and 1999S. However, the Red Book does not give any specifications for silver SBAs. Therefore, just like the proof Sacagaweas, they have the same metallic content as the business strikes.

Non-proof SBAs with the S mint mark were also produced in 1981, but only in mint sets.

Don't forget - "proof" refers to the method of striking, not the metallic content and the US Mint has produced many million non-silver proof coins.

Why not just use a Quarter with that date? Almost the same size. Or get a half dollar of that date and grind it down to the size of those baby dollars. If you do want those baby dollars you should be able to get lots from banks as already noted. Around me they are asking people if they want them and few do.
