I'm thinking EF, but I have a question: what are the silvery spots at the rim on the obv. at about 3 and 6:30? was the coin previously in a mount?

 

Nubs from the slab used to hold the coin in place.

 

color makes it look cleaned to me, au details?

 

I am much better with silver, but I’d call it XF, maybe cleaned... @jwitten may be of help here.

Not NGC ... far, far worse than THAT.

But look, melt is 220, I paid 235 or 240...

Then nothing to lose, old fellow. Perhaps something to gain with a higher grade? Maybe so. Heck, just leave it in the basement slab and call it a 'draw'.....

AU Details - damaged. Dig marks in R in LIBERTY on obverse.

 

Melt value is actually a little under $160. If it was not for the damage on the R on the obverse, I would grade it AU50, or maybe XF45. As is, XF-AU details, damaged. Graded by a crappy company, I will guess MS62, haha. I don't think it is a weak D.

 

Melt for $5 gold is $315+, so surely melt for a $2.5 gold is $158.

On the other hand, just try finding a quarter eagle for anywhere near melt. Even the pawn shops know better.

I’m at ef 45 details. It’s ex jewelry I see 3 mount marks on the obverse at 3 o clock 7 o clock and 10 o clock
