Hi all, I am new to coin collecting (in the last several months) and I recently sent in my first submission to PCGS for grading. I sent 4 different forms since I was doing 4 different services. The post office says all were delivered on 12/13/2017. My crossover submission box that I sent to be graded express, PCGS says they received 12/19/2017 while they say they received the others on 12/15/2017. Anyway to make a long story short, they still have not graded the express box- which I thought was 5 day turn around (and I did not expect to count weekend or holidays). Is this common, for a five day service to be scanned in late, then to take longer that 5 days after that even? Thank you!
It’s the holidays and they had a December show. Lots of people getting their year end submissions too. Express is usually pretty good time wise but with any level it’s only business days that are counted and show days don’t always count either. Mid to late December is usually not a quick turnaround time for express.
I think if you post your question on the PCGS forum you may receive additional comments. Often the moderators will answer you question.
Clock starts when they process it into their system, not when the post office drops it off. They get 100s (1000s) of packages a day... Extra services, attributions, anything that needs more eyes - takes longer.
Couldn’t agree more. Unless you are a dealer getting the discounts they can get, the cost for an individual to send in coins to PCGS is very high. I’ve bought PCGS slabbed coins (mostly MS66 pennies and some other moderns) for $10 and less. That’s less that what it would cost me in postage to get a coin graded by PCGS. And IMHO paying for their rush service is a waste of money. Now, with all that said, IF you already have a coin that getting it slabbed will up its value hundreds or even thousands of dollars, by all means get it slabbed. But I think ANACS has the best deal around of the big four.
Anything that goes up by hundreds or especially thousands of dollars from grading you would be losing more in value using anything but PCGS or NGC than you save on grading fees
Quite so, but who makes the educated determination? A couple of coin geeks on coin talk? I don't want to be on the hook for telling someone to bet the ranch........
To me it’s pretty straight forward usually. Obvious lower value ones that are kind of only worth it with their specials are good candidates for ANACS. If it’s worth paying full price with ANACS then it’s worth PCGS or NGC
This time of year, it's possible the data entry, you can see, is not running as fast as the grading process is. They may have already shipped it back to you.
