Well, to be honest I should have said 'followed it around at a distance'. The price was always too steep. This year I decided 'oh, what the heck' and purchased it for even more than it previously had been listed. I'm super glad I did though. So, not a very sound financial choice, but a pleasing collecting one!
I think you made both a good financial choice, plus have the added pleasure of adding such nice coins to your collection. Its a win/win! I go by impulse, if I really want something....just go for it. I may end up doing just that in the Triton XXI auction....there is one item I REALLY want Heck its only $.
Here is my top Flavian of the year: Julia Titi, daughter of Titus, mistress of Domitian, d. 89. 27-26 mm. Large! Silver cistophorus. Mint uncertain, possibly struck in Asia and possibly struck in Rome for Asia. IVLIA AVGVSTA DIVI TITI F • VESTA, Vesta seated left holding palladium and long scepter. Sear RCV 2914. RPC II 871. RIC II.1 Domitian 848, "mint of Rome, 82"
Ah! So it was you who got it! I had it on my Vcoins 'want list' and saw it had been sold. You made a good choice for the asking price.
Those are some fantastic coins David. My personal favourites are numbers 7 and 8. I'm surprised how many came from eBay. Any more I disregard eBay as nothing more than a den of fraud and forgery. It seems I should reconsider my a view.
If you know what to look for and where to look it isn't all that bad, despite what some have said. I'm a specialist and know my material pretty well (i.e. what looks right and what doesn't). However, if one collects generally all areas it could be a very daunting place!
I agree, several of my rare Flavian's this year have come from ebay including an "O" mint Domitian. Obverse is my avatar.
I always learn a lot too while researching them! Getting into the weeds of a particular issue can be quite rewarding.
# 1 is LOVELY!!! 10 is pretty darn cool though, if I couldn't see the legend, I wouldn't know who that was..cool style! I got a Domitian limes denarius for my SS gift!
