    I just started coin collecting probably 3 months ago and came across this quarter. Looks like a 5 printed by the 8 in the 1978 D quarter. Looks like a mint error but I'm not sure.

    Hey, welcome. Think about it, where in the minting process would this come from? I think you are seeing an artifact, something that looks like a 5 but isn't. Your post will attract other opinions, wait for them and don't get bent our of shape if some people get sarcastic.

    No.. it's not a Mint Error. Probably a stain that looks like a 5..
    By the way, coins are struck/minted and never printed. Paper currency is printed.

    Peace

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

    What you have is a dirty, old quarter that has circulated for almost 40 years. There is no telling how many filthy hands held this coin, but there is one thing you can take to the bank. It's only worth 25c! Don't spend it all in one place.

    @Kentucky

    That's about as sarcastic as I want to be. Is that okay?

    That was adequately sarcastic without being sadistic...

    Maybe the pictures doesn't do justice. It does look dirty to where you can imagine it looks like a 5, but looking at it, it looks like it's struck, thanks for correcting me @paddyman98 and all the responses as well.

    Okay! So, let's try an experiment, and maybe you will prove me wrong. If it is just dirt, then you should be able to soak the coin in pure acetone to remove some or all of the grime. What do you say?
