Hoping to find someone who could maybe tell me their opinion on this, whether or not they think it is real, or where I could find info on true authenticity. I have had it looked at by numerous people (not coin collectors but educated somewhat on the matter) and have been told although they cannot tell me it's real, they aren't able to find anything to say it's not real. Please help!! **note** I can take better quality photos for anyone interested in seeing them. These were quick for the forum.
There looks to be a seam on the edge of the coin which suggests to me that it's fake. Check the coin yourself and if you can feel a seam around the edge then it's definitely fake. If you can try to take a better picture of the edge, then we should be able to determine once and for all if it's real or counterfeit. Hope this helps.
Well, who knows what you’ll find in the future. This hobby has its surprises and people come across amazing things all the time
Thank you so much for checking it out for me!! I figured the seam meant fake, but it is a pretty good looking conterfiet! I'm currently researching my collection out of curiosity now. Lol!
Welcome @Katyjorgie to CT. I love to see a new person with such a good attitude! Keep on looking at every coin, the darnest things show up. Reed
Thank you! I've got a bad habit of collecting and not researching and I've found some small gold mines in my own house I had for years! I usually just keep stuff for catching my eye rather than the value, though. Thanks so much for the welcome!
Actually there was a post recently on how so many ancient planchets were cast, the seam itself is not firm proof of a fake. Repost this in the ancient forum to see what people think.
The person I had look at it said that the doubloons (to his knowledge) in 1600s - 1700s were made each side separately then put together because of the way they were pressed. That's the only reason I've questioned it and can't find hardly anyone who could tell me FOR SURE. Not any good coin collectors in my town to go to. Thank you I will sure do that.
