Gamla (stan) is referenced as the "Town Between Bridges" and is the original old town of Stockholm until 1980. I assume this commemorates this as a medal. But I have no catalogs for pricing these.

The 1897 date suggests something different. Well, not really different - Gamla Stan (Old Town) does indeed refer to the historic "heart" of Stockholm. :) But Gamla Stockholm was a miniature city, built for the World Expo in that year. The first article is about that mini-old-town but in Swedish, so you may want to try Google Translate or so. The second one, in English, is about the expo in general.

1897 was the jubilee year for Oscar II... who is the medal signed by --- on the obverse?

So it seems like this is a souvenir of the Stockholm Exhibition...
