While feeding on the bottom...this coin presented itself.:mouth: The dealer seemed very knowledgable about the coins he sold, and is very reputable and well known, and was introduced to me by collect89!:high5:

I could not leave the show without taking possession of this piece. Its of a type I needed (for my biblical shekel collection), and wanted for my (Ancient Coin Collection):smile

The dimensions are my own but the attribution belongs to the dealer. With a fresh mind today, I feel it might be incorrect.

    Phoenicia, Tyre
AR Shekel c. 1st cent. BC
    30.0 mm x 12.17 g
Obverse: Laureate Head of Melqart (Hercules) right.
Reverse: Eagle Standing on Prow; Punic letter between legs, KAIASULOU TYPOYIEPAS
Monograms and dated PKTH (worn) yr.129.= s. 3AD.

I believe he is correct with saying it is the first century BC but not with his interpretation of the obliterated date.
I went in search of similar examples in order to scratch the itch. As I suspected- PKTH would place the coin at 3 AD, Buuuuuuutttt the coin clearly lacks the KP monogram added after 18 BC. In its place is a rather complex monogram of the first series of the Melkart shekels. :too-cool-for:

I believe the punic letter is "B".

I attempted to match the monogram to examples on the internet and I could not find an exact match. I attempted to reduce the monogram into its component letters (easier said than done) , and they make something like D PH I TH. I have no idea what the monogram is, a person or mint location?? I did find similar but not exact on coins dating to around 80 BC. Any help or clarification, would be much appreciated. I have a feeling there is no good way to date this coin without the Greek numbers in the left reverse field. The coin is worn silly but still holds a high spot in my collection. (As a coin I normally could not afford even in crappy condition.) :b8nce:

Any help or comments would be much appreciated! Thanks guys!(and gals).

Try using a natural spectrum light, as much light as you can without getting glare. You can play with the exposure too.

The dealer to whom you show it in person is the best source. From the photo, I would not buy he coin sight unseen. Very minor differences make large differences and it being genuine is not certain from the image. This site is not an appraisal venue. Answers you get would be meaningless.
