I was given approx. 32,000 pennies. This came from a collection where the person started saving pennies in the 1950's. They kept saving them up until 1980. What few I have looked at so far date from the 1920's on up. I posted on the other forum and was told to go buy the redbook and get a good magnifier. I will be doing that tommorow. I came across a 1922 penny and from what I have read it can be worth some money. I'm 98.5% that it does not have a mintmark. Maybe 32,000 is not a very large collection of pennies. I simply don't know anything about coin collecting. My question is would you look at this as starting a collection or strictly look at it to maximize the $ amount and sell them? Many thanks for your input!

If they are minted before 1982, you can be easily assured that they are all copper coins and definately worth more than the coins minted these days. You should get a red book and check for possible varities - you can never know how much some coins can be worth these days (that is if you have the time). Good luck and welcome to cointalk :)

Well if you got the time get the redbook and start looking this would be a great start to a life long hobby. There are a number of things to look for that a redbook dont tell about. Coppercoins is a good site and other fourms have info threads that are great(i dont know if i can name them on this fourm) Matte proofs on early dates are rare and worth alot, but like i said great starting point and have fun

Oh yes and the 1922 if there is no D mint mark congrats (very rare very costly) if it has a weak D not as rare but in high grade worth pretty much

He is probably serious as well and not joking. Purported "collectors" can be a coins worse enemy. There was a guy at my old coin club that I used to go to a couple of years ago who would sell American silver coins to refineries. One time he had a tray full of half dollars with coins as far back as 1917 all the way up to mint BU '64 Kennedies and he told me that whatever didn't sell that night was going to be melted. Told me he removes all of the keys, well darnit I don't care if those coins were common dates or not! I like to think back to the era's of which they were around circulating, feel the history of them and in the blinking of an eye they are gone forever.
