As some of you know, I took a part-time job at a coin shop here in my home town. I work Saturdays, and have been there 3 years. This year my boss surprised me by giving me a coin that I have tried deseperately to sell all year as I love it and find it interesting. Any help attributing and grading it would be appreciated. I think it’s a Breen 1-A
You got 1/2 cent as a Christmas Bonus? I thought the company I work for was cheap. JK Nice coin. Enjoy it.
I cook the bone with the beans after I have eaten the ham. Nice pieces fall off the bone and into the beans. Nice brown 1/2 cent. An underappreciated series and all of the dates nice low mintages.
Nice B 1-A State IV. At least it looks like it to me through the holder. The fraction bar should join the ribbon to the right, and the crack through AM joins the wreath. It looks somewhere between G-6 and VG-8. Nice Christmas bonus, an image of my bonus is below.
The reverse is nicer F-12. And the obverse has wear VG-08. I would be at net grade VG-10. If everything were graded on the same scale the obv might be 06. Net 08. But many coins are graded on a curve, and because this is a 215 year old coin, it gets a little benefit of the doubt on the grade.
Wouldn’t it be unusual for a coin to wear more on one side than the other and could we not attribute the weakness on the coin to a worn obverse die?
Most assuredly.........cripes, I've gotten slapped down trying to determine 'wear' as opposed to 'weak' strike. The thing is, ya gotta be an aficionado of the series.
