Crack In The Steps

    I can't tell what this is scratch maybe? Doesn't look right. It's a 1962 D that is in immaculate MS condition. That's what makes it odd to me.

    Looks like a die break, is it raised? Back up and take a pic of the entire reverse.

    From your pics, It looks like a scratch/gouge. I think I see metal displaced at the bottom of the mark

    General rule:

    Indented, with raised, displaced, or moved metal along the edges = Scratch

    Indented with edges flush to the field or devices = small, light scratch or Strike through

    Raised = Die polish, die crack or plating blister (for cents)

    Not sure what you want to know. The reverse mark on the steps could be a planchet defect that wasn't struck out or a hit on the coin after it was struck. The obverse marks are scratches on the die from polishing, as they appear to be raised on the coin and pass "under" the design.
