This recently arrived from Switzerland, the last Obolos auction, and I think it suits the season. It also has the oldest provenance in my collection. BRUTTIUM. Kaulonia. Circa 475-425 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 7.90 g, 8 h). ΚΑV Apollo striding to right. Rev. Stag standing right. Noe, Caulonia 75g (this coin). HN III 2044. Nicely toned and with a remarkably well-centered reverse. Test cut on the obverse, otherwise, very fine / extremely fine. From the collection of W. F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired from Münzen und Medaillen, Basel, and from the Smith collection, Ars Classica XV, 2 July 1930, 228. While the obverse of this coin is damaged by an ancient cut, the reverse is exceptionally well-centered and attractive. It is interesting to note that the stag seems to be wearing a collar, thus indicating its sacral character. Please join in with anything related, Bruttium, Apollo, stag, oldest provenance or whatever. Jim
It totally looks like Rudolph, haha! I was really happy a bit back to finally get a Bruttium, lion facing, optical illusion.
Oh! @H8_modern! That is the most adorable thing! Congratulations on your addition of this coin to your collection. And when you say it has the oldest provenance, does that mean that is the coin you can actually trace who the owner of it was farthest back in time? As opposed to it being the oldest coin you own? Thank you. I really like this coin. I love moose and this looks sort of like a moose, so...
Yeah https://archive.org/stream/MonnaiesAntiquesGrecquesRomainesXV#page/n149/mode/2up and my oldest provenanced coin is still on it's way from Switzerland.
Nice! I've always liked these and still want an early incuse type. I think that 'collar' is really cool, too. BRUTTIUM, Kaulonia AR Nomos. 7.97g, 21.8mm. AR Nomos. That one is really detailed. Very nice. Mine looks very archaic compared to yours. I guess a master engraved yours and an apprentice did mine.
Awesome stag coin and fascinating provenance. Here's the only stag-themed coin I own: Philip I (the Arab); 244–9 CE. AR antoninianus, Ludi Saeculares issue. Rome mint, 5th officina. 9th emission, struck 248 CE; 21mm, 3.44g, 2h. RIC IV 19, RSC 182. Obv: IMP PHILIPPVS AVG; radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. WAY cool on the Rudolf @H8_modern ! You need to paint the schnocker red! I bagged a Reindeer in Finland years ago and kept the pelt on my office wall for years. Xmas time I would put a Day-Glo Red ping-pong ball on the wall on the head side of the pelt... A great coin from an amazing time period in Southern Italy. If you go to Kaulonia today there is little left of its former glory. Congrats!
